Robot Shape Collage
The 1st graders from Investigators, Imagination and Explorers have just finished up their robot shape collages. We started the year learning about lines, and this project teaches students how lines can become shapes. They start with stencils to help them plan out the shapes for their drawings, and finish with a construction paper version to show off their shapes. Tune in to a future post to see the finished collages.

Incredible Sculptures
4th graders from The Incredibles team had to create sculptures using Magic Nuudles (cornstarch-based modeling pieces).
The Challenge:
1) the sculpture must use at least 30 Nuudles.
2) it must be freestanding (has to stand on the table on its own without tipping over).
3) it has to be a person or an animal (could be a fantasy creature).
Here are some in-progress. Stay tuned for a later post to see the final products

Homemade stylus
I built myself a homemade stylus--a pen-like device for drawing, writing, or interacting with a touch pad (like iPad or iPod). You can find the instructions here if you'd like to make one yourself. Here's how it works. As long as you're holding onto the paperclip, your body's natural electrical field transfers the energy into the (damp) sponge and registers on the touch pad. The pen, sponge and paperclip by themselves don't make a difference--you need all of the parts working together. So there you go--a little science in support of your doodling. Have fun!

2012 Doodle 4 Google Contest Submissions
These pieces were created by a group of artist from Grades 4-8 as entries for the 2012 Doodle 4 Google Contest. This year's challengers had to answer the prompt "If I could travel in time, I'd visit..."
Students incorporated history, art styles from different time periods, and a number of interesting and creative visuals in support of their doodle.

Giant Grid Portraits in the Art Gallery
If you haven't already noticed the "Giant Grid Portraits of Famous People" on the walls at the Student Art Gallery (by the cafeteria) then you haven't been to City School lately. These creations are the product of Mrs. Brown's and Ms. Haberman's 7th and 8th grade art classes. They are awesome!!!
